Finn – 11 Days Old

O.K. so i’m the world’s worst Dad. I haven’t posted any new pictures of Finn since he was 2 days old! Everyone has been asking for new pictures and we have been patiently waiting until his Jaundice subsides some. For those of you who don’t know Jaundice is defined as “a condition in which a person’s skin and the whites of the eyes are discolored yellow due to an increased level of bile pigments in the blood”. Essentially he was yellow! Finn is looking more human like in color so we made him model a bit. I’m sure this won’t be the last time.

Happy Birthday Finn

Today I am happy to wish my new son a happy birthday.  Finn Matthew Shirey graced us with his presence at 11:17 on Wednesday, January 13, 2010.  Believe it or not, he was born on his due date!  Mom & Finn are doing great as well as are Dad and Big Sister Camille!   Help me in wishing him a Happy Birthday!  I have a feeling you will be seeing more baby shots of him here in the near future.

Happy Holidays from the Thorson Family

Good friends of mine asked me if I could take some family portraits of them as well as come up with a holiday card for them to share. The girls, Cali and Ava, were very into the whole picture thing. They wanted to try a million poses both together and as individuals. Both girls were dressed head to toe in Crew Cuts by J.Crew. I decided to use my grey paper background to give them the J.Crew catalog look. Below is their card, what do you think? Cute right?

Lume + Lux Product Shoot

My new friend Ivy contacted me to help her with some product shots for her e-tail website http://www.lumeandlux.com.  Ivy hand picked the model and her assistant diligently went to work steaming all of the apparel. It was nice working with a model who knew how to pose and just jumped right in. A few hours and 20 or so outfits later we were done, take a look at a few of the images we captured.

Portraits of Emery

The wonderful world of Facebook has brought me back in touch with a friend from highschool. Kelly was in the process of putting together a portrait wall of her beautiful children and asked if I would be willing to photograph her daughter. Emery was excited to get started. Mom was telling her to “smile with her eyes” and to move this hand, move that foot… Apparently, mom had done a bit of modeling in the past. I was happy that she was there to help me out.

Pelotonia 2009

Well, sadly Pelotonia 2009 is half over. Most of the riders were working on 25, 50 or 100 miles today but a handful (about 500) will be getting up at 6:00am on Sunday to finish for a total of 180 miles. It was inspiring to see the mass outpouring of support and commitment from the staff, volunteers and riders this morning.

Friday night’s Opening Ceremony included a video tribute to cancer survivors. As soon as it’s posted online I will post a link. It’s well worth watching.

Here are a few images from Friday and Saturday.

Balloons and Tunes 2009 Wrap Up

Well, the Baloons & Tunes 2009 is a wrap. I missed the Friday night glow and the Sunday night flight but I was at the gates by 5:30 both Saturday and Sunday. @BeulahPark offered such a great setting for the Saturday night glow. This was one of the shots from the east side of the pond.
My new friend Nicole's Balloon "Volito" (Latin for I Fly)

Sunday morning provided quite a few opportunities to make great images. None of them topped the “dip” that Volito decided to take.

A little Southwestern Flare

I liked how the sun flare mimicked the sun design in the balloon.

Balloons and Tunes Saturday Dawn

Balloons & Tunes 2009 at Beulah Park started out a little rough. I arrived this morning to completely clear star filled skies. As the sun started to rise you could see haze beginning to build to the west. The organizers “stalled” things along for about an hour past the scheduled launch time. They made one last weather check at 7:30 and gave everyone the thumbs up to light the sky.

There were about 20 balloons this morning. These are a few of my favorites. More to come.

Mushrooms in the Yard

I have seen wild mushrooms before, these were nothing new except for the fact that they are in my front yard. I was getting ready to mow the grass before the Africa like heats builds when i noticed patches of mushrooms pluming from the lawn. Not one, two but probably 8 different patches! The more i started looking at them the more beautiful they became. I grabbed the Canon 5DMII and my 100mm 2.8 Macro and went to work.

I originally shot these with the B&W Picture Style within the camera but was surprised to see that they were in color when I imported them into Lightroom2. I’m new to LR2 so maybe this is normal. I ran a few actions to soften the color and add a vignette, dropped them on my blog template and here you are.

Now, I really have to mow the grass.

Mike Nicholson

A fellow Sandbox’er, Mike Nicholson, asked me to photograph him for some promo items that he was putting together. Mike is a Graphic Designer and also teaches Hip-Hop Dance classes. While we were trying to capture the dance motion, I was able to sneak a portrait or two.

Remembering Quinn Today

It’s hard to believe that Quinn has been gone for a year and a month. Even though she was only with us for 3 months she touch us all. I took some flowers to the cemetery to mark the date.  Remembering her today and always.  Miss you Baby Quinn, watch over us. Mommy, Daddy & Camille.

Chihuly Reimagined Exhibit

The Franklin Park Conservatory is hosting a Chihuly Glass Exhibit labeled “Reimagined”.  They have done an amazing job of integrating the glassworks into the landscape of the conservatory.  If you are in Columbus, it’s a must see.  The exhibit leaves us in March of 2010 so there’s plenty of time to get out and see it.

Jessi Biggert Photo Shoot

Last week I had the opportunity to photograph Jessi Biggert, an Ohio State University Theatre Major. She was in need of some portrait shots to send along with her bio/resume. We started out shooting outside to take advantage of the beautiful evening light. Moved inside for some more studio type shots.

This is one of my favorite shots. Jessi was sitting on a boulder with the river in the background, notice the bokeh.

Ms. Brown Eyes

The holiday weekend brought us together with some good friends. Lillian was hamming it up for the camera. This is one of my favorites.

Geneva Hyman Photo-shoot

I had the pleasure of working with Geneva Hyman last week. Geneva is a beautiful model/photographer who was willing to let me take up a few hours of her time. It was good to work with her since she knows both sides of the lens. I picked up a few tricks as well as getting my feet wet. I’m actively looking for the chance to practice. Want to have your picture taken? Contact me and we can figure out a time to get together and make it happen!

Here are a few of the shots, enjoy!

Paws Up – Day1

If you ever have a need to get completely away from reality, I suggest that you lookup Paws Up resort in Greenwich, MT.  About an hour north of Missoula, MT this resort is over 35,000 acres of Montana’s greatest wilderness.  We are staying in Tent City, which is about 12 tents located 100 yards from the Blackfoot River.

After making it to the resort, we were introduced to the cast of staff who we would be seeing most of the week.  Morgan our “Butler” was quick to make sure that we knew he was there to make “it” happen.  That is one of the amazing benefits to staying at Paws Up.

Our first activity consisted of a Carriage Ride around the property.  Steve was our driver and on the yak were Pete and Re-Pete.  Camille was quick to warm up to the cowboy and we were off.  We rode by the Estate houses which are currently for sale.  For a quick $1.8M one of these houses can be yours!

We made our way back to Tent City after the carriage ride.  While driving up the road toward our tent, we spotted a Bald Eagle perched up in a dead tree.  Mike our driver told us about a nest that was in that same tree but had fallen out in the past year.  Dan and i literally ran to our tents to get our camera.  We were able to get about 50 yards from the tree where the bird was sitting.  This was by far my favorite part of Day1.

Dinner, campfire with some smores and the first star of the night brought on sleepy time.  Tomorrow, fly fishing, pony ride and spa.  Ahhh the life!

Fire Training

My brother is a firefighter/medic for a local fire station.  He called me one morning and said, “Hey, we’re burning a house down today. Do you want to come take some pictures?”  What a silly question, doesn’t every guy have some odd attraction to fire?  So these are some of the shots I got while I was trying to keep my lens hood from melting.

Silhouettes

maysunrise.jpg Like every photographer, I had a vision of the “image” I wanted to make today. It was some water in the foreground, a sailboat mid and the morning pre-sunrise sky in the back. Actually, I came up with the idea yesterday. Last night I quickly gathered my gear in my ThinkTank StreetWalker HD bag. (I’m planning a review of this thing soon, but I LOVE THIS BAG) and went to bed.

At 5:05am my internal clock said “WAKE UP”. I quickly made my daughters lunch(my morning chore) and scurried out the door. As I’m driving to the reservoir that is close, I can see the sun starting to come up. I parked, unpacked my stuff and headed towards the marina. As I started looking for a place to frame my shot, I noticed that the Crescent Moon and a star were a bit above the horizon. NICE… Get that in the shot.

The idea here is to meter off the brighter sky in the background and then focus on the sail mast or boats in the foreground. This should give you an underexposed foreground with a perfectly lit sky. I like the execution of the boat but am very happy with the goose pictures. Let me know what you think.

Camille and the barn

A quick visit to the in-laws. Lucky for me the light was beautiful and my daughter was being cooperative. I used my 16-35mm 2.8L lense and used f/22 to get a long DOF.
